FULL TIME STAFF ATTORNEY - VETERAN'S RIGHTS PROJECT Overview:
For more than 50 years, Nassau Suffolk Law Services (NSLS) has been providing free, high-quality legal counsel in civil matters when basic human needs are at stake including:
eviction and foreclosure prevention, income maintenance, disability, elder law, healthcare, consumer fraud and more.
As the only provider of comprehensive civil legal services on Long Island, our services support thousands of poor and low-income families and individuals who cannot afford an attorney.
With the gap separating those who can and cannot afford legal representation widening each day, we work to ensure that everyone has equal access to justice, regardless of their ability to pay.
NSLS has a staff of nearly one hundred employees situated in three offices across Long Island.

Job Description:
Full time Staff Attorney for a project to assist low-income veterans with a wide variety of legal needs, including but not limited to public benefits, heath care access, housing, consumer debt, child support, challenges to inappropriate discharges where eligibility for housing or benefits are negatively impacted, service-connected disability, other VA related benefits, etc.
The attorney will be expected to handle issues from intake through hearing or trial and appeal as necessary.
Participation in legal education, outreach events, and engagement with community partners is also expected.
START DATE:
Immediate SALARY:
$66,000-$92,561 DOE, union scale with excellent benefits.
REQUIREMENTS:
Admission to New York State Bar and admission or eligibility for admission to the Federal Bar.
Applicants already VA Certified are preferred.
Applicants who have passed the State Bar and are pending admission will also be considered.
Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English preferred.
Applicants who have taken the exam and are waiting to hear the results may be considered.
Demonstrated commitment to the goals and clients of the legal services program.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
